What is Tang Soo Do? Tang Soo Do, a traditional Korean Martial Art, is Tang Soo Do means the “way of the worthy hand.” It is both a hard and soft style of karate. This means it uses strong, powerful techniques along with softer, flowing techniques. Tang Soo Do is a martial art, not a sport. It is not a game played solely for the sake of winning, but rather a physical and intellectual activity designed to foster physical and mental well-being. Tang Soo Do develops body coordination, control, self-image, discipline, confidence and respect. As members of the American Tang Soo Do Association, our instructors are held to the standard set forth by Grandmaster Byrne, the founder of the ATA. Tang Soo Do training allows the body to gain the ultimate use of its faculties through intensive physical and mental training. Its method of instruction is designed to help an individual develop character, integrity, self-confidence, concentration and a respect for others. Therefore, the element of competition against an opponent is not a part of Tang Soo Do's tradition. Students are taught mastery over their own bodies and minds and to develop their individual potential to its fullest. Even in sparring, the goal of Tang Soo Do instruction is not to vanquish an opponent. In Tang Soo Do, sparring is used as a means for students to help one another achieve a perfection of their techniques. |
Who can learn Tang Soo Do?
Any man, woman or child can learn Tang Soo Do. Our students can begin their journey as young as five and continue well past retirement age. Training begins with private instruction so the student is comfortable upon entering the regular class structure. It is never too late to begin training; all that’s required is the desire to learn. This martial art does not require on to be a super athlete or to be in great shape to begin training.
I'm not particularly athletic. Can I learn Tang Soo Do effectively?
The training you receive learning Tang Soo Do will develop your athletic abilities. However, since no two people are alike, each student is patiently encouraged to learn at his or her own pace. Each student is inspired to achieve their own potential. We welcome all persons, regardless of their physical prowess to enroll in our school.
What will I learn?
Tang Soo Do workouts include a regimen of stretching for flexibility, foot techniques and combinations for control, one-steps for focus, free sparring for speed, and self defense for confidence. Our programs are designed to develop “can do attitudes,” which benefit both young and young at heart. By setting challenging, yet obtainable goals, students leave class with a sense of accomplishment that carries over into their daily lives.
What will my first class be like?
In the first class you will be taught the basic techniques to defend yourself from strikes, as well as, a couple of techniques. You will be paired with an instructor and fellow white belts right from the beginning.
Shouldn't I get in shape first to do karate?
That would be like getting in shape first so you can then get in shape. The karate training itself will get you into shape. The key point here is that you will go at your own level and build up to being in shape.
How often should I train?
Students can attend as often as they wish. We recommend choosing two classes per week and making it a habit to attend on those days. We find this particularly effective with children.
How long will it take me to become reasonably proficient?
The time it will take you to become proficient will vary depending on basic ability, however, if you train a minimum of two days a week you'll progress at a good rate.
Can I train more than just two days a week?
Yes and if you do you will become more comfortable with the techniques in a shorter time.
What do you teach my child?
The karate training includes working on manners, self control, self respect and respect for others. The emphasis of the karate itself is on defense, not offense.
Will karate training make my child too aggressive?
In this school, the children are taught that karate is a way to handle violence and aggression, not a way to become violent and aggressive. Our students become very good at recognizing fight situations and handling them without getting into a fight themselves.
Is sparring necessary to learn karate?
In this school it is an absolute necessity. You do not begin to spar until you have demonstrated control over your techniques and can defend against the actions of your partner and then, you begin slowly.
I'm very concerned about street crime and violence. Is Tang Soo Do an effective self-defense style?
In addition to traditional Tang Soo Do training, students learn a variety of controlled self-defense techniques that are quite effective. However, be aware that while Tang Soo Do provides one with the tools to defend oneself in undesirable situations, avoiding such situations, if possible, is still the most proven method of self defense.
